Avs Reduce Roster to 26

The Avalanche roster is beginning to round out after the club announced a flurry of moves today. In the morning, Conner Bleackley was returned to Red Deer (WHL). In addition, the following players were reassigned to San Antonio (AHL):

Andrew Agozzino, LW
Chris Bigras, D
Joey Hishon, C
Andreas Martinsen, LW
Maxim Noreau, D
Calvin Pickard, G

Yet, the movement didn't stop there; the club released defenseman Andrej Meszaros from his PTO late in the afternoon and sent Marc-Andre Cliche, Patrick Bordeleau and Zach Redmond to San Antonio.

The moves in the afternoon show the Avs are willing to admit that some of the depth on last year's roster was somewhat lacking. It also shows that the Avs defensive core to start the season is set, with the club likely to carry eight D.

Erik Johnson
Tyson Barrie
Francois Beauchemin
Nikita Zadorov
Brad Stuart
Brandon Gormley
Nick Holden
Nate Guenin

The Avs have two preseason games remaining and Jesse Winchester will likely start the season on injured reserve. It also looks like 2015 first round pick Mikko Rantanen will start the season in Denver. This is further emphasized with the Avs decision to have 2013 first round pick Nathan MacKinnon start the year at center. The Avs are expected to go with Matt Duchene, new addition Carl Soderberg, MacKinnon, and John Mitchell down the middle.
