He was the Avs top draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (50th overall), but Cameron Gaunce has moved on. In a trade announced late Tuesday afternoon, the Colorado Avalanche dealt the defenseman to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Tomas Vincour. Gaunce only had one brief stint in an Avalanche uniform, 11 games in the 2010-11 season which netted him one goal.
Gaunce more known for his defensive acumin, has been a stalwart for the Lake Erie Monsters in recent years. With the likes of Tyson Barrie and Stefan Elliott receiving recalls ahead of him, has the writing been on the wall?
The Avs defensive struggles this year have been well known. Yet, the Avs have given up on young defenseman in the past (Tom Gilbert, Kevin Shattenkirk, Johnny Boychuk, Colby Cohen) with mixed results. Whether Gaunce was given a fair opportunity with Colorado is too early to tell. Considering his skill set differs from the likes of Barrie and Elliott, and the Avs really do not have many rugged defenders like him within the system, his trade can at least be described as a slight risk.
Vincour, who has been assigned to the Lake Erie Monsters, suited up in15 games for the Dallas Stars this season with two goals and an assist. While he projects as a bottom six forward in the NHL, his immediate impact will be with Lake Erie, who is on its way to missing the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons.
