Last Sunday, on the Kamloops Blazers' bus in the midst of a return from a game in Seattle, Smith's line-mate JC Lipon received a call from Hockey Canada, letting him know that he had received a tryout for the world junior team.
There were congratulations. Excitement. Eventually, there was a pause. Another expectation. Lipon and Smith were tied for the most points in the WHL at the time, each with 55.
The next call never came. No news for Smith was bad news. He wasn't one of the 37 players invited to camp.
