With all eyes on the WHL’s oldest franchise heading into the 2012-13 season as MasterCard Memorial Cup hosts, it all started with last Friday’s decision to officially strip Duncan Siemens of his captaincy.
When Blades head coach and general manager Lorne Molleken opted to start the season without any player wearing a letter on his sweater, the easy choice would have been to eventually allow Siemens to retain his leadership symbol.
However, Molleken showed gumption by opting for change, selecting overage forward Brenden Walker to be the team’s new captain.
Then things got really interesting.
Molleken gave Walker carte blanche to pick his alternate captains and Darren Dietz, Josh Nicholls, Lukas Sutter and Brent Benson were selected to wear letters in a rotating system, leaving Siemens out of the mix.
