Injuries and Roster Reduction

The Avs dropped their second preseason game on Friday evening 3-2 to the St. Louis Blues. After the game, Greg Mauldin tweeted that he was being reassigned to the Lake Erie Monsters.

Also, the official Twitter feed of the Saskatoon Blades announced that Duncan Siemens would be returned to the team on Saturday. This would mean that the contract Siemens signed with the Avs earlier this summer would slide to the 2012-13 season.

The Avs will likely announce these roster cuts on Saturday, and it's possible these will not be the only two.

The Avalanche did suffer a couple of injuries recently. Defenseman Jan Hejda suffered a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for the next 2-4 weeks according to the Denver Post.

The Post also reported that forward Brandon Yip broke his forearm on Friday in the game against the Blues and his time frame for returning is unknown.

Considering the Avs bout with injuries in previous seasons, it wouldn't be a surprise if some Avalanche fans became nervous. However, injuries give opportunities to other players; namely Tyson Barrie, who has racked up two goals and an assist in the Avs first two preseason games.

Speaking of injuries, Joey Hishon's absence from Avalanche training camp has been frustrating and disappointing for everyone. Hishon is apparently still feeling the effects of a concussion that knocked him out of the Memorial Cup earlier this spring. Hishon has returned to Ontario as he continues his recovery.

There is no timetable for his return, but when he is healthy enough, in all likelyhood, he will report to the Lake Erie Monsters.
