Lake Erie dumps Grand Rapids 7-2. The Monsters scored five times in the second period. Justin Mercier (11) had the lone tally in the first period. The Monsters leading scorer, Ben Walter (19), scored just 50 seconds into the second period. A Travis Gawryletz (3) blast gave the Monsters a 3-0 lead.
After two quick goals by the Griffins to bring their deficit to just one, Greg Mauldin (12, 13) scored twice in a span of 2:14. Julian Talbot (10) closed out the game's scoring with a power play tally at the 14:20 mark of the third period.
Walter had three assists, to go along with his goal, and was named the first star of the game. David Van der Gulik also had three assists and earned second star of the game honors. Mauldin was the third star of the game.
Jason Bacashihua stopped 23 shots en route to his 18th win of the season. With only the top three teams in the North Division likely to make the playoffs, the Monsters are currently tied with Toronto for third with 78 points each. However, Lake Erie has three games in hand. The Monsters continue their road trip on Saturday in Milwaukee.
Owen Sound skates past Guelph 5-2. The Attack scored four times on the power play. Joey Hishon assisted on two of those power play tallies in the second period. He was even for the contest. Owen Sound has won seven of their last 10 games.
Plymouth upends Kitchener 4-1. Neither club was able to score on the power play. Brandon Maxwell made 26 saves in the loss. The Rangers have struggled down the stretch and are now winless in their last six games.
Saskatoon trips up Regina 3-2 in overtime. The Blades scored twice on the power play. Stefan Elliott was plus one for the contest. Saskatoon has won eight of their last 10 games. They conclude the regular season on Saturday against the same Regina Pats club.
Portland edges Everett 4-3. The Winterhawks had a 38-29 shot advantage. Troy Rutkowski had a quiet game offensively and was minus one for the contest. Portland has won four games in a row.
Spokane blanks Seattle 5-0. The teams combined to go 0-11 on the power play. Calvin Pickard gave up four of the Chiefs goals on 33 shots. Seattle is 5-5 in their last 10 contests.
CCHA Tournament -- Semifinals (Detroit, MI)
Western Michigan tops Michigan 5-2. The Broncos will face the Miami RedHawks in the Mason Cup final. Luke Moffatt skated on the fourth line for the Wolverines. He fired a single shot on net and was plus one for the game. Michigan will face Notre Dame in the third place game.
Hockey East Tournament -- Semifinals (Boston, MA)
Boston College holds off Northeastern 5-4. Paul Carey recorded two shots on goal and had an even rating. The Eagles scored twice on the power play. BC will face Merrimack in the championship game on Saturday.
WCHA Final Five -- Semifinals (St. Paul, MN)
North Dakota trims Colorado College 4-3. North Dakota will face Denver in the final on Saturday. Brad Malone had four shots on goal, and scored a short-handed goal for the Fighting Sioux in the third period. He was plus two for the contest and named the third star of the game.
