World Junior Championship

Finland stuns the United States 4-1. Sami Aittokallio turned in a sparkling performance with 38 saves for Finland. The skaters for Finland scored three times against American John Gibson in the third period. Buffalo Sabres draft pick, Joel Armia, had two of the markers. Finland will take on Denmark on Friday.


Lake Erie trips up Grand Rapids in overtime 6-5. The Monsters raced off to a 4-0 lead after the end of the first period. However, the Griffins would chip at the lead and eventually tie the game at five with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Yet, their celebration was short lived as Tyson Barrie scored the game winner 35 seconds into the overtime session. Barrie would add a couple of assists and was named the first star of the game.

Hugh Jessiman started the scoring for the Monsters with two first period tallies. He recorded a hat trick with a goal scored late in the second period. Jessiman leads the club in goals with 15. He was named second star of the game. David Liffiton (3) and Justin Mercier (6) also scored in the four goal first frame for Lake Erie. 

Evan Brophey contributed with four assists and earned third star of the game honors. Cedrick Desjardins stopped 39 Griffins shots and earned his eighth win of the season in 14 starts. The Monsters will play host to the Toronto Marlies on Thursday.

Plymouth dumps London 6-1. The Knights were 0-6 with the man advantage. Garrett Meurs was held off the score sheet and was minus one for the contest. The Whalers are winners of seven of their last 10 games.


Val-d'Or falls to Gatineau 5-3. The Olympiques scored three times in the second period. Each club scored a goal on the power play. Gabriel Beaupre was minus two for the Foreurs. He did assist on a second period goal for Val-d'Or. He was also penalized for slashing and finished with two shots.


Portland doubles up Victoria 6-3. The Winterhawks fired 54 shots on the Royals net. Troy Rutkowski had a quiet offensive game and finished with a plus one rating. Portland scored twice on the power play. The Winterhawks have won back-to-back games.

Seattle edges Everett in a shoot-out 4-3. The clubs combined to go 0-4 on the power play. Calvin Pickard stopped 28 shots in regulation and four in overtime. Seattle won the shoot-out 1-0. The Thunderbirds are two games under 0.500.



Linköpings HC trims Växjö Lakers HC in a shoot-out 2-1. Defenseman Jonas Holos had nearly 26 minutes of ice time for Växjö. He was minus one for the game and was credited with one shot on goal.
