The Avalanche announced on Thursday that they have traded the rights to prospect Michael Bournival to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Ryan O'Byrne. The Avs have suffered a rash of injuries to their blueline recently. O'Byrne didn't appear to fit in to any furture plans for Montreal.
Bournival was drafted in the third round by Colorado this past summer. Currently, he is captain of the Shawinigan Cataractes of the QMJHL. He has 24 points in 17 games, which is 20th in the QMJHL. Bournival recently competed for the QMJHL in the Subway Super Series and has an outside chance to make the Canadian roster for the WJC in December.
Bournival may have been sacrificed over a draft pick as Colorado has already traded draft picks in 2011 and 2012 in previous transactions. Bournival is a good prospect, but doesn't project to be an impact player on the professional level. He does however possess many good qualities and is an extremely hard worker.
